Mazda i-ACTIV All-Wheel Drive
All-Wheel Drive has become commonplace in the auto industry, but the thing that separates AWD from other drivetrains is its variety. There are so many different ways to implement AWD in a vehicle that it’s rare for two manufacturers to engineer their respective systems to same way. That means, of course, that some AWD systems are better than others.
Mazda is one of the brands that takes such pride in its engineering prowess that it has a name for its AWD system: the i-ACTIV AWD® system. Designed to combine the best of Mazda’s state-of-the-art driving dynamics with top-notch comfort and safety, i-ACTIV AWD® uses autonomous technology to provide the latest in on-the-road confidence without sacrificing fuel economy.
So how does it work? i-ACTIV AWD® is always monitoring road conditions in order to automatically distribute torque between the front and rear wheels. That means that drivers are able to navigate slippery or hazardous roads safely, whereas the system will also adapt to dry, smooth road conditions so drivers don’t waste unnecessary fuel or torque.
The sensors on Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD® system calculate ground speed and front wheel speed in order to detect front wheel slippage. These calculations can help correct torque and prevent tire spinning. As a result, Mazda vehicles equipped with i-ACTIV AWD® are safer and more reassuring than ever before.
