2019 Mazda3 Safety Spotlight | Bedford, OH
The all-new 2019 Mazda3 Hatchback and Mazda3 Sedan are among the most stylish vehicles on the road today, and according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, they’re among the safest. The IIHS recently awarded both the Mazda3 Hatchback and Mazda3 Sedan its 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK awards, recognizing both for their exceptional performance in crash testing and their advanced technologies.
IIHS Top Safety Pick Winners
To earn the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK, a vehicle must earn scores of “Good” in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests; a rating of “Good” or “Acceptable” in the passenger-side small overlap front test; an “Advanced” or “Superior” score for front crash prevention; and a “Good” or “Acceptable” headlight rating.
The 2019 Mazda3 Hatchback earned the 2019 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK with standard equipment while the Mazda3 Sedan earned the award with optional Smart Brake Support front crash prevention technology. With Smart Brake Support, the Mazda3 Sedan and Mazda3 Hatchback were able to avoid collisions at speeds of 12 mph and 25 mph to earn the coveted “Superior” rating.
Mazda3 Safety Features
Smart Brake Support is one of several cutting-edge safety features offered with the all-new 2019 Mazda3, joining Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go among others. The Mazda3 also boasts a completely new feature: Driver Attention Alert, which lets you know if you are showing signs of fatigue and encourages you to take precautions.
“Mazda constantly has an eye on the future, and we are dedicated to providing our drivers with advanced vehicles that build driver confidence,” said MNAO President Jeff Guyton. “This IIHS recognition is a testament to the efficacy of Mazda’s Proactive Safety Philosophy and we will continue to strive to meet the highest safety standards.”
Mazda3 Interior “Quality of Quietness”
The all-new 2019 Mazda3 Sedan and Mazda3 Hatchback are made to evoke feelings of power, confidence, calm, and refinement. With unique exteriors that advance the KODO: Soul of Motion design language, both iterations of the Mazda3 have little trouble standing out in a crowd. But inside is arguably just as important, and the 2019 Mazda3 interior is engineered around a “quality of quietness” that puts your peace of mind at the center of the experience.
In building the 2019 Mazda3, engineers focused on three sound characteristics: “volume of sound,” “changes in pitch and tone over time,” and “the direction from which the sound originates.” By considering these characteristics in the layout of the Mazda3, they built a cabin that both eliminates exterior noise and enhances the quality of in-vehicle audio.
One such decision involved mounting subwoofers in the corners of the cabin, which improves the quality of bass, and angling speakers away from areas where reflected sounds might deaden the clarity of the music.
“Simply stating that Mazda mounted the woofers in the cowl side panels might leave people to think it was a minor change,” said Koji Wakamatsu, a member of the Electric and Electronics Performance department. “That could not be further from the truth. In fact, it represents an engineering breakthrough that improves the quality of both audio reproduction and sound insulation.”
